MAC and Raq

Posted in General by Rachel on the February 17th, 2007

Copyright acknowledgement: MACWe see it all the time don’t we? The cosmetic houses promoting their products using celebrities. Nothing new or amazing in that.

But what I am totally bowled over by, is that the picture you see to the right is of 67 year old Raquel Welch.

I mean, how on earth does that makeup artist do it (photoshopping aside). I want to hire whoever they are - but wouldn’t be able to afford to.

Where are the wrinkles, the tell-tale signs. I’m nearly twenty years younger and still look like a hag by comparison. OK, still look like a hag, period.

Oh well, it’s given me a few ideas - really like the “tiger tiger” shade of lippy and the “Vital Spark” lipglass, finished off by the “Summerfruit” Cremestick liner. Total cost: £30.50. But drew a line at £29.00 for the four colour eyeshadow set. Mind you, if I could achieve such a transformation it would be worth it!!! Dream on…

I think it’s kinda cool when fashion houses do something a little unexpected. Hasn’t Sophie Ellis-Bextor been taken on by another leading brand? Okay, so she’s not 67 (Go Raquel!) but she is an unconventional choice.

Another series of adverts that sprung to mind was the M&S series for Christmas. They had a range of ages which I thought was spot on. Sure, a few ladies looked like they needed a burger or two, but that’s fashion [shrug]

Unconventional/quirky is my cup of tea, too. Can you remember which brand Sophie Ellis-Bextor is promoting? She’s gorgeous but in a completely different way to Ms Welch.

And yes, there should be more of the bigger ladies in TV (no pun intended) advertising. The bigger lady can look glam and why shouldn’t she strut her stuff. TBH, I must be getting jaded seeing all these stick insects. :) Yeah, I saw a pic on Sarah Hayes blog and the model’s thighs were obscenely thin - not appealing at all - see what I mean?

My mistake - Ms Ellis-Bextor is working for Monsoon (fab clothes) - http://www.monsoon.co.uk/page/aug

The size 0 thing is just wrong. I hear rumours of the fashion industry being pushed towards having particular body mass indexes for models - anyone too thin will be out on their ear.

Given the hype surrounding size 0, perhaps young women are going for it because that’s where the money is. There was talk in the early 90s about the underfed working the catwalks, but we seem to have gone further.

Props to Dove for doing their ‘normal’ women ad series. I really hope that there’s a grass-root backlash against the walking dead and a return towards everyday sizes.
