Two New Galleries
You know those idle Sunday afternoon moments when you’re just that little bit too bored? When dangerous ideas can masquarade as innocent ones? Had one of those moments, grabbed the camera and headed into the town centre.
Said innocent idea being to capture the high street from a women’s fashion perspective, with the aim of starting a chronicle. It’s a slim possibility this could have been an idea germinating at the back of the brain since 2007 when I took a couple of shots of a red dress I fell in love with at Meadowhall. I had gone prepared as I was killing time while my daughters were at a gig at Sheffield Arena.
Back to last Sunday. Had this ‘brilliant’ idea that by taking regular window shopping shots I could build up a record of women’s high street fashion that would be far more authentic than any magazine retrospective in years to come. Just not sure now whether it was a flash of genius or something that’s going to send me on a fool’s errand. Time will tell.
So, for starters, I give you high street fashion 2007 (only a handful) and the start this last weekend of high street fashion 2009. Was it such a daft idea, or not?

Personally, I liked it. I don’t realy ‘do’ fashion – well, okay, maybe some evenings out I do :-) – but the changing trends do interest me.
Sometimes they’re cool and I like them, other times I look agog and wonder how that became popular (or moreoften, was pushed at us).
Some nice outfits in there :-) Maybe we should start a list of key fashion trends that have been and gone. Not so much, what to wear, but what women (and trannys) were wearing day to day. :-)

I’m just impressed at your self restraint in not buying those shoes. :o)

@Lynn What an excellent idea. I nominate you, Lynn. I’ll expect that first post on your blog shortly :)
@Sophie It’s easy when you’ve no money, honey.

A brilliant idea Alex. Mix it up with shots of real life people wearing what they actually bought and you have a winner.Anyhows, who needs excuses to take photos of women’s clothes?
P.S. I watched out for you and V at the BNO on Friday 13th but couldn’t spot either of you. Sorry to have missed you. Hope you both had a great time.
xx

I’ll take that as a yes, then Lyn ;)
Hang on a minute Gabby, I’m not looking for a full-time job! And unfortunately couldn’t make it to BNO. Last minute problems put paid to that. :(

Hi Alex, let me introduce myself, i am the wife of a tv girl, Vicky, who is exploring the possibility that she is tg. I think your site is very cool and very honest. It’s a real help to someone like me to get a clearer picture of this version of normal. I think the photo project is a terrific idea, just don’t let any shop managers spot you, they’ll think your trying to steal their designs! By the way, if you know any other wives who stood by their gal, I’d love to know. If you think it’s challenging being tv/tg, try being the wife who doesn’t throw her hands up in horror and leave but say’s ‘i guess that makes me gay’

Thank you for such an honest comment Emma and you have my sincerest wishes that you and your partner can ‘work it out’. It can add a new and positive dimension to your lives and I do so hope you can both enjoy this new facet to your relationship.
However, I have to say I wouldn’t call it a version of normal – but then I guess ‘normal’ is a moveable feast anyway! :)
And yes, I can point you in the direction of a couple who are very positively embracing the TG aspect of their relationship – and I’m sure Mrs. B will be happy to talk to you. Probably the best contact point is her Flickr page which lists her other contact details:
Mrs. B
Good Luck to you both!

Thank you so much for the info! I’m surfing the net and finding I’m not alone!!! TG wives of the world unite:-) even though it’s been a tough few months with a lot of revelations and challenges I’m seeing the smile come back to my Vicky’s face, and that’s worth everything. Shakespeare got it right (as usual) when he said ‘to thine own self be true’. Maybe I expressed myself poorly, when I said ‘this version of normal’. We have a profoundly disabled son, so I’ve never been that interested in ‘normal’ – being the best me I can be is probably closer to the truth, and that goes for my son and Vicky too. Anyway… Thank you Alex, you are an inspiration :-)
